The Dream Factory: Studio Roosegaarde
I had the chance to visit the visionary design lab Studio Roosegaarde and to meet its Founder Daan Roosegaarde and his team of international talents. The Studio was founded in 2007 and is now located in a former glass factory in the harbour area of Rotterdam. It is a social design lab, workshop, showroom and office at the same time and called the Dream Factory as Daan and the team always have the approach to make dream-like ideas become reality.
The Studio got world-wide recognition by their innovations like the Smart Highway, Waterlicht or the Smog Free Project. As I lived and worked in Beijing the Smog Free Project immediately catched my attention. The project functions as followed: Large outdoor air purifier in the size of a tower are placed in Chinas polluted mega cities. The tower inhales the polluted air, cleans it and releases fresh air afterwards. The captured smog particles are compressed to diamond-like jewelry and placed on a ring. This tangible souvenir is equal to 1000 m3 of cleaned air! Currently Daan and the team are working on an additional idea the Smog Free Bicycle.
Another famous and inspirational example of their work can be already found at the nearby airport Schiphol. The artwork "Beyond" displays an over 100 meters long photograph of the dutch cloudy sky. The Trick: The team found a way to implement the lenticular picture technic into this huge artwork, known from 3D Postcards. Walking by the artwork the airport visitors have the feeling of real deep space and moving clouds. An 1:1 test print in the studio was already very, very impressive!
An upcoming project will feature light-producing algea and human interaction. The first prototypes are already mind-blowing and hypnotizing. So follow the studio and don't miss the release in November and the live installation!
After being introduced to many people of great talent and being lectured about their advant-garde work I was lucky to join a barbecue with the members and friends of Studio Roosegaarde. Finishing the day with homemade steaks and fresh vegetables helped to digest the impressive innovations and work. Thanks also a lot to Anna and Marie who made it possible to meet Daan and the Studio!
